Biography

Dr. R.J. Turner, M.D.Richard J. Turner was born on November 1, 1929 in Grenada, Mississippi, to Richard J. Turner, Jr. and Edith Pearson Turner. He graduated from Baton Rouge, La. Public High School in 1946, and received a BS degree in zoology and chemistry from Louisiana State University in 1950. Turner joined the US Air Force ROTC in 1950, was accepted to medical school and graduated from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in 1954. Richard J. Turner III married Ellise Brown Weldon on August 8, 1953. They have lived in Fort Worth for over forty years, and have six children and nine grandchildren.

Military Service and Surgical Residency
Turner served as a commissioned officer with the rank of Major in the Regular Air Force. He served his internship at Brooke Army Hospital in San Antonio, Texas from 1954–1955; as a surgical resident at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana from 1955-1958; as Chief Resident-Surgery in 1959; and as Chief of General Surgery, USAF Hospital, Carswell, Fort Worth, from 1959-1964.

Private Practice
Turner opened a surgical practice in 1964, and in 1995, established Surgical Oncology Associates with Dr. John W. Freese in Fort Worth, Texas. He retired from the active practice of surgery on August 31, 2002, and has started a second career in writing and quality assurance consultation.
